INOVECO at the regional dialogue table for sustainable development – Experience of the waste management panel in Chisinau
INOVECO's participation in the Cross-Border Conference for Sustainable Development Romania – Republic of Moldova, held in Chisinau, meant more to us than just attending an official event. It was a context in which we found ourselves both as professionals in environmental infrastructureand as people directly involved in the real challenges of waste management.
I came to Chisinau with decades of project experience, but also with a desire to listen, understand, and build real bridges of dialogue at an important moment for cooperation between Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
An event with regional relevance
On January 20, 2026, at the Academy of Economic Studies in Chisinau, the Cross-Border Conference for Sustainable Development brought together representatives of central and local public authorities, experts, private sector leaders, professional organizations, and representatives of civil society from both countries. The event was held under the auspices of the ministries responsible for the environment and sustainable development policies.
The conference had a clear goal: to support the Republic of Moldova in the process of aligning with European Union standards in the field of environment and energy, in the context of its pre-accession process. The discussions were anchored in concrete realities, not just in general strategic directions.
The agenda was structured around three major thematic panels: waste management, water resource management, and renewable energy. Each of these addressed critical priorities for green transition and sustainable development at the cross-border level.
The waste management panel, seen from the inside
For the INOVECO team, the panel dedicated to waste management was one of the most relevant moments of the conference. The discussions were practical, honest, and focused on real-world experience.
I participated alongside representatives of the Romanian and Moldovan ministries of the environment, local authorities, sanitation operators, and other professionals in the field. The dialogue was open, discussing both solutions that work and real difficulties encountered in implementing waste management systems.
Field experience, not just concepts
In our presentation, we discussed INOVECO's experience gained over more than 33 years of activity in environmental infrastructure in Romania. This experience is supported by over 300 environmental infrastructure projects carried out at the national level.
Approximately 70% of the Integrated Waste Management Systems (IWMS) developed in Romania include INOVECO's expertise, and the company has directly contributed to the creation of about 40% of the existing composting facilities. These figures reflect years of fieldwork, collaboration with authorities and operators, adaptation to different local contexts, and solutions built step by step.
Concrete examples of Integrated Waste Management Centers (CMID), sorting, transfer, and composting stations, as well as projects to close and green non-compliant landfills. These are projects that today serve entire communities and comply with European environmental standards.
What does waste management mean in practice?
A key message of the INOVECO presentation was the importance of an integrated approach to waste management, based on technical consulting , proper design, and phased implementation. Our experience shows that functional solutions start with the consulting phase, where the local context, legislative framework, waste flows, and real needs of beneficiaries are analyzed.
INOVECO offers comprehensive consulting, design, integration, and execution services, acting as an an integrator of environmental technologies in complex infrastructure projects. This role allows for the development of coherent, efficient, and long-term adapted systems. The integrated approach reduces the risk of fragmented solutions and inefficient investments.
Composting and treatment of bio-waste
Composting and biowaste treatment played an important role in discussions about the transition to a circular economy. These solutions are essential in waste management and have a direct impact on reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.
INOVECO's experience shows that the success of composting facilities does not depend solely on technology. It requires coherent public policies, well-designed collection systems, the involvement of operators, and, very importantly, public education.
Digitization and standards
Another aspect addressed was the role of digitization in environmental infrastructure projects. The use of BIM methodology and CDE platforms, in accordance with the SR EN ISO 19650 standard, allows for better project coordination and greater transparency throughout the entire investment life cycle.
These tools contribute to better planned, more efficient, and more sustainable projects in the long term.
INOVECO's involvement beyond projects – EduCompost
For INOVECO, sustainable development is not just about infrastructure and technology, but also about long-term investment in people and education. Through the EduCompost program, we are actively involved in communities and the educational environment, supporting information sessions in schools about recycling, separate collection, and composting.
EduCompost is a program through which we explain, in a way that children and young people can understand, what biodegradable waste is, why composting is important, and how they can contribute to protecting the environment through simple actions. Our experience in infrastructure projects has shown us that systems really work when they are understood and embraced by the community.
Through these actions, INOVECO aims to create a direct link between environmental infrastructure and citizens' everyday behavior, contributing to the formation of a more conscious and responsible generation.
What we took away from the panel on waste management in Chisinau
The experience gained at the conference confirmed that there is a genuine openness to dialogue and a desire to develop solutions that will work over time. We interacted with committed professionals who are concerned with the applicability and development of sustainable waste management systems adapted to local realities.
For INOVECO, this experience confirmed that the path we have followed over more than three decades of activity is relevant at the regional level. We return with a responsibility to continue this dialogue and with the motivation to contribute to projects that generate real impact.
The dialogue that began in Chisinau does not stop here. We will continue it responsibly, with solid partnerships and with the conviction that sustainable development is built step by step, together.
