Semipermeable membrane technology
Semipermeable membrane technology is the most advanced composting technology in the world, with over 150 plants located in over 20 countries, treating 10,000 tons of organic waste per day, 365 days a year. The technology offers an efficient solution for the sustainable treatment of different types of organic waste in the most varied climatic conditions with a very good control of emissions and odors.
They are versatile and easily scalable installations, forces easy to use all year round. They can process all types of biodegradable waste listed above. It offers the lowest processing cost per ton of waste compared to any other technology currently available on the market. Due to the performance of the semi-permeable membrane, the processing in such installations generates a very low level of emissions (reduction of gaseous emissions of up to 97% compared to composting in open furrows).
They are plants that process waste in batches and can treat quantities of waste starting from 1200 m3/year. They can be scaled up to any size, the world's largest plant with this technology processes 200,000m3/year.
MODE OF OPERATION
- The ePTFE microporous membrane produced is laminated between two layers of woven material with high mechanical strength and UV stability.
- The structure of the membrane provides it with semipermeable properties.
- Laminate tarpaulin provides excellent control of odors, eliminating the need to use a bio-filter.
- Condensation on the inside of the tarpaulin leads to a "wet brush" effect.
- Air/gas molecules can pass through the membrane (its pores are 700 times larger)
- The water is retained by the ePTFE membrane (the pores are 20000 times smaller than the smallest drop of water)
- At the microscopic level, the membrane has a three-dimensional structure
Functions of the ePTFE membrane
- Weather protection (closed system)
- Humidity control = ideal climate for the biological process
- Water management (separation between leachate and rainwater)
- Bio-filter role = efficient control of odors and emissions
TYPES OF WASTE THAT CAN BE COMPOSTED
- Green waste;
- Separately collected organic waste;
- Wet fraction of municipal solid waste;
- Sludge from wastewater treatment plants;
- Manure from farms of cows, pigs, birds, etc.
ADVANTAGES
- The installation can be used 365 days / year, regardless of climatic conditions;
- Excellent cost/performance ratio through minimal investment and low operating costs;
- Eliminating the problems created by odors and other emissions;
- High treatment capacity on a small area, with human involvement and minimal energy consumption.
- No additional watering is required during treatment;
- The treated material is safely sanitized;
- The technology does not require other air treatment plants (biofilters or other similar equipment);
- This composting system is very easily scalable.
